Since starting the fiddle at age 7, Matthew Reid has entertained thousands and thousands of people and has demonstrated that he has a real gift for fiddle music.
This year he will release his debut album “Born to Fiddle” with Carl Curley, Judy Lowe, and Jon Matthews featuring some favorite Cape Breton fiddle tunes that will definitely get the toes a tappin’!
Matthew started fiddle lessons at age 7 with Cynthia MacLeod and later with Aaron Crane for 4 years. In 2003 Matthew Joined the Queens County Fiddlers and was with them for 5 years, and in 2004 was on their CD “Forty Fiddles Flat Out”. He also has played fiddle on the Children Wish Foundation Christmas CD for two years. Matthew teaches fiddle lessons at National Music in Charlottetown. Over the course of his 11 years of playing, Matthew has played for many ceilidhs around Prince Edward Island in communities such as Fort Augustus, Sturgeon, Tracadie, and Charlottetown. Other places include, the St. Andrews Chapel Ceilidh, Music in Motion Ceilidh in Winsloe, and Keltic Kids at Peakes Quay for 3 years. Matthew has also played in notable places such as the Rollo Bay Fiddle Festival, QEH Eastlink Telethon, Atlantic Fiddlers Jamboree, Tourism Charlottetown’s “Always On Stage”, and the Charlottetown Rotary Club.
A 3rd year Science student at UPEI, Matthew enjoys playing the fiddle at ceilidh’s, benefits, weddings, and other professional events, but he also likes playing fiddle tunes at jam sessions with local artists. Learning new fiddle tunes is also a favorite past time for Matthew, if it is on his own, or with other people it always proves to be hours upon hours of enjoyment. Matthew plans to pursue his studies with the dream of a career in Medicine. One thing he knows for sure, no matter where life takes him, he will be playing his fiddle.
