SOCAN Songwriter of the Year First Music PEI Award Handed Out During May Run Music Festival

May 19, 2016 | Music PEI kicked off the first of the ticketed shows for May Run Music Festival on Wednesday night in Georgetown at Songwriter’s Concert at King’s Playhouse. The first Music PEI Award of the week was handed out at the King’s Playhouse during a night that also featured breathtaking performances from songwriter of the year nominees Nathan Wiley, Emilee Sorrey, Tim Chaisson, Josh Carter and Juno award winning artist Catherine MacLellan.

Singer-songwriter Irish Mythen, who is currently on tour in the United States, came away from the night with the first award of the year, SOCAN Songwriter of the Year for her song “Gypsy Dancer”.

Thirty three more awards will be handed out at ceremonies throughout the week. Visual Artist, Video, Digital Achievement and Media Person of the Year will be handed out at Art for Music at The Guild in Charlottetown and the Acadian/Francophone Artist of the Year award will be announced at Music Mosaic presented by La Fédération Culturelle de l'ÎPÉ at Watermark Theatre on Thursday night. The Country Recording of the Year award will be announced at the Country Jubilee in Summerside at the Harbourfront Theatre on Friday night and the Classical/Jazz Recording of the Year award will be handed out at the Classical Show presented by PEI Symphony Orchestra at the Florence Simmons Hall on Saturday night. Twenty four awards will be handed out at the newly created Music PEI Awards Party on Sunday afternoon leaving two awards, Group Recording and Album of the Year to be presented at the grand finale to May Run Music Festival, the Closing Concert presented by Cavendish Beach Music Festival, this Sunday night at the Delta PEI Convention Centre.
