SAVE THE DATE, THE 2024 CANADIAN SONG CONFERENCE IS BACK FOR IT’S 10TH YEAR THIS MAY!

☝️SONGWRITER CHALLENGE
Open call to Prince Edward Island songwriters! Are you looking for a unique opportunity to collaborate with other artists, producers, and industry professionals from the world of music supervision, sync, publishing, radio, labels, and more?

Here’s your chance!

The Canadian Songwriter Challenge is a component of the CSC (Canadian Song Conference) and was created by Music PEI through a partnership with other provincial Music Industry Associations. This project puts artists from PEI together with artists from across Canada to collaborate and co-write in pairs under the mentorship of a prominent Canadian producer. Each pair of artists will co-write and record two songs in demo form. Music PEI will provide the recording studio and will work with the other MIAs to select the other participating artists. This year it will run from May 27th - 29th, 2024.

✌️LISTENING SESSIONS
Selected artists will have the opportunity to present highlights from their catalog of recorded songs to our group of industry delegates, including professionals from music supervision, sync, licensing, publishing, and more. This effort aims to have their music considered for various projects.

Nominated for Achievement in World Music, Tzu-Chen

Nominated for Achievement in World Music, Tzu-Cheng Wang, a professional musician and acclaimed violinist, released his album “Hello, PEI!” in 2022 as a heartfelt tribute to Prince Edward Island. “Hello, PEI!” was nominated for two(2) 2023 Music PEI Awards, Instrumental Recording of the Year and Musician of the Year. His deep connection to the Island is evident through a year filled with community and charity concerts. With a rich career spanning the globe, Tzu-Cheng has conducted orchestras at esteemed venues like the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts, while also gracing stages at renowned concert halls worldwide.
A graduate of a France Conservatoire with degrees in violin and conducting, Tzu-Cheng’s musical prowess extends across genres, from classical to Jazz, Taiwanese Traditional Folk Music, and his original compositions. Tzu-Cheng Wang stands as a dedicated musical ambassador, blending his melodies with the heartbeats of PEI’s landscapes and communities. Program goals:
Focus on emerging industry professionals in the music industry to grow
capacity in the Atlantic region.
Allow for those interested or already working in the music industry to
find a mentor who can provide a brief virtual mentorship and in-person
meetings during JUNO Week in Halifax.
Where possible, work to complement existing mentorship programs in the region.
Prioritize applications from equity-deserving groups to increase
representation throughout the Atlantic music industry.
Who can apply:
Residents of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and
Newfoundland and Labrador.
*a resident is defined as a person who has lived in one of the
Atlantic provinces listed above for no less than one year by March 1,
2023, or a person who was born in one of the Atlantic provinces listed
above and pays taxes in that same province.
Those working, or wanting to work, in non-performing roles in the
music industry (e.g. booking, stage support, management, live tech,
publicity, etc.)
Those not currently enrolled in a music education program.

Today on 🌟 SPOTLIGHT SERIES 🌟 the incredible Brooke MacArthur. She answers the question, what makes a great entertainer?

Born and raised in Prince Edward Island, Canada, Brooke MacArthur is a singer/songwriter with a love for country music. Her passion for performing began at the age of 12, playing at local talent shows and since those early beginnings, Brooke’s career has ascended to new heights, making her mark on renowned stages at festivals such as the Cavendish Beach Music Festival and Rock the Boat festival and has opened for celebrated artists such as the Reklaws, Tim Hicks, and Alan Doyle. Brooke has mastered the ability to captivate a crowd with her unique strong tone, and powerful stage presence.

Her love for songwriting started in her late teens, writing relatable lyrics that speak about the truths in relationships while being inspired by artists like Taylor Swift and Shania Twain. Over the last few years, Brooke has collaborated with talented songwriters in Nashville and has spent time in the studio working with CCMA and Juno award winning producer, Jason Barry. In 2023, Brooke made her musical mark with the release of two distinct singles: “I Wonder’ and “Nobody Knows.” These songs offer listeners a glimpse into the diverse range of Brooke’s artistry, showcasing her ability to transition seamlessly from heartfelt ballads to spirited, upbeat country-rock tracks.

Throughout the past year, Brooke has dedicated herself to honing her songwriting skills. Presently, she’s in the studio, collaborating with the highly talented producer, Colin Buchanan, to craft new music that promises to captivate audiences. 👌🏻Lawrence Maxwell knows what makes a great entertainer and good thing because he is next up in our 🌟Spotlight Series🌟

Lawrence Maxwell cut his teeth on beer caps, rough waters, and country music. His latest album, Ballad of Miles has been nominated for seven Music PEI Awards and has received airplay on: Sirius XM’s ‘Top of the Country,’ Country Hits Radio UK and CBC ‘Q’. With its neo-traditional production, and comparisons to both John Prine and Merle Haggard, Roots Music Canada has dubbed the record “the first great Canadian alt-country album of 2022.” His music video for “Back to Cape Breton” was a finalist in the Canadian Independent Music Video Awards and his song “Better You” was selected in the Top 100 for CBC/Toyota Searchlight in 2022. Having completed his first series of international performances in 2023 at Tønder Festival in Denmark and AmericanaFest-UK in London, Maxwell is expanding his audience as he exports into new markets. As an ECMA award nominee and two-time Music P.E.I. award winner, this Prince Edward Island singer-songwriter will tell it to you like it’s folk, and sing it to you like it’s country.

Next up in our Spotlight Series is SaltWire Entertainer of the Year Nominee, Brandon Howard Roy.

A consummate entertainer, we asked Brandon was makes a GREAT one. He had some thoughts.

With his latest single Give Me Love recently nominated for Song of the Year at the 2023 East Coast Music Awards as well as numerous ECMA and Music PEI Award nods over the years, Brandon Howard Roy is a Prince Edward Island based Queer singer songwriter who has firmly established himself as a force in the East Coast indie pop music scene. Backed by an all star band, his sound is fun and groovy sung with a voice that reaches the stratosphere, described as the ‘love child of Mika and Freddie Mercury’ by Myles Rusak, CEO of the Sound Of Music Festival. His debut album Tough Stuff made a big splash in the Canadian music, garnering critical acclaim, 100 000 streams and video views on its accompanying music videos, and found chart and radio success in Atlantic Canada which led to opening slots for Canadian icons Hawksley Workman, Talia Schlanger and Menno Versteeg. His electric stage presence has helped him sell out venues all across PEI and the other Maritimes provinces.

His most recent release Give Me Love is an anthem which explores radical self love and expressing Queer joy, and offers a taste of what’s to come as he wraps up recording his sophomore record due out later in 2023. The song spawned his first Canadian tour with stops in Quebec, Ontario’s Sound of Music Festival, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI, and led to features on Exclaim’s Eh-list, in Canadian Beats Magazine and a performance of the song on CTV Morning Live. Two of his compositions have been recorded with the PEI Symphony Orchestra as part of the Canada Council’s Digital Now initiative. His latest single ‘Kangaroo’ was produced by Billboard Top 10 artist Kayla Diamond, and he will be releasing his second album soon. He will be showcasing at the 2023 Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg, Germany.

@innechomusic answers the question “What makes a GREAT entertainer?”

Three musicians from different metaphorical worlds, converged in Prince Edward Island of all places. It was perfect timing though, as they started to create a sound and a journey in music none of them expected. They’d come for the tunes and stayed for the longest session yet. Inn Echo was formed in 2019.

Tuli (BC) Karson (ON) and Tom (USA) were music students far from home and perhaps it was the building of new spaces which sparked a gravitational pull to bind it all together. From fiddle to cello, guitar to fiddle the three started closely weaving what is now their distinct symphony of living tradition. Releasing HEMISPHERES September 2023 was the next frontier for the band with producers Jake Charron and Donnie Richard at the helm.

Inn Echo composes the majority of the repertoire amongst the three of them, but the sets are anointed with some very special composers; subtly embedded for maximum drive. And drive they have, not to mention flown, boated and trained around several continents in the last two years. From the iconic Woodford Folk Festival in Australia to the Hebridean Celtic Festival in Scotland, The Calgary and Canmore Folk Festivals or the hometown PEI Festival of Small Halls, Inn Echo have a reputation as tradition keepers and tune makers that will take you to dawn. This is the new traditional sound of Canada. These are the new players. Watch the sun come up with Inn Echo. You’ll dance like the world depends on it.
